In this key scene Hamlet interrupts Claudius whilst he is praying. Claudius confesses that he cannot ask God for forgiveness, as he does not wish to give up the throne that he killed his brother for.
Hamlet moves into the room a short time after Polonius had left and Claudius had started to pray. Hamlet stands whilst Claudius is on his knees. Hamlet talks about how he knows that it was Claudius who had killed his father and that he will take revenge. But Hamlet tells Claudius that he will not kill him whilst he is praying because Hamlet does not want Claudius to go to heaven after he had killed Hamlets father.
When Hamlet leaves Claudius stands up and states that: “Words with out thought never to heaven go.” Showing that he may say that he is sorry for the murder of his brother and that he asks God for his forgiveness. But because he doesn’t really mean these words. God wont listen.
