The ghost is a much-feared character in the play. The Ghost of the dead king Hamlet is seen moving around the castle. He appears only a few times once whilst telling hamlet that he was killed by his brother (king Claudius) who had now taken over the throne. He appears second time whilst hamlet is confronting his mother about her marriage to Claudius. Whilst convincing her that her marriage was wrong in the eyes of god and the law. Hamlet sees the ghost of his dead father standing behind his mother. When the queen turns around she cant see him even though Hamlet (and the audience) can.
The ghost’s presence in the play brings the audience into the feel of the play. They see the ghost on the stage and this automatically shows the supernatural side of the play. With a ghost in the 1100’s people were very cautious as one did not know weather it was a demon or an angel.
When hamlet hears of a ghost who has taken the appearance of his father he goes to see it. As soon as he sees the ghost beaconing him Hamlet decides to follow it against the advice of Hiratio. Hamlet follows said ghost, leaving Hiratio. Once alone the ghost tells hamlet how king Claudius murdered him, and how hamlet should not blame his mother.
